In Mediaeval times panes of glass were often made by the Crown glass process. A lump of molten glass was rolled, blown, expanded, flattened and finally spun into a disc before being cut into panes. The sheets were thicker towards the edge of the disc and were usually installed with the heavier side at the bottom. Other techniques of forming glass panes have been used but it is only the relatively recent float glass processes which have produced good quality flat sheets of glass.

Consider maintenance As all veteran renovators know, the solid wood products sold today do not stand up as well to the elements as the wood used 50 or years ago. This is mostly because the lumber is farmed quickly rather than naturally grown slowly. The cladding comes factory painted in your color of choice, and that finish is guaranteed for 20 years—a good three to four times longer than exterior paint applied to solid wood windows.

Many such bottles with an initial on the base were purposely made with no glass manufacturer identification. Mark is seen mostly on the lower heel area on soda and beer bottles. The number usually precedes the letter, but in some cases the order may be reversed.
These marks were used by ABCO at least during the period, and evidence from bottle collectors indicate these date code markings may have been used as early as when American Bottle Company was incorporated , all the way up to at least in some cases.

Smart glass has been around for decades, but it is quite pricey and has found only niche applications, such as the windows of a new Boeing jetliner. But a new kind of electrochromic window glass, which changes color in response to the addition or removal of electronic charge, is more versatile than the technology now on the market, and it could be cheaper, too. Commercially available materials can block only the visible component of sunlight, allowing the invisible near-infrared component, which produces heat, to pass through.
A new type of glass developed by a group led by Delia Milliron , a professor of chemical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, can selectively block the heat-producing component as well as the visible light. Milliron says the performance is now good enough for a startup she cofounded to move forward with plans to build a prototype manufacturing line based on these recent advances. The nanocrystals and the glassy material have distinct optical properties, which change when the materials are electronically charged or discharged.
The nanocrystals can either block near-infrared light or allow it to pass through, while the glassy material can transition between a transparent state and one that blocks visible light. It can switch between modes in just minutes—faster than any commercial electrochromic window material Milliron knows of.
